Rhodes Old Town

The Old City of Rhodes with a population of 6,000 inhabitants is surrounded by medieval walls with seven gates: To enter any of these gates is to enter another world. Now it happens to be a world of tourist shops, restaurants, cafes and museums, more like a Turkish bazaar than any Greek city, but anyone with imagination can't help but be touched by the history and beauty of the place. The Medieval City of Rhodes offers an opportunity to lose track of time. There are roughly 200 streets or lanes that simply have no name. Whenever you feel the need to find your bearings, you can ask for Sokratous, which is the closest the Old Town of Rhodes comes to having a main street.

Marine Aquarium, In Old Town

Your kids will love this! The Aquarium is located in the basement of the Hydro Biological Station of Rhodes and offers the visitors the chance to have a close up view of the marine life of the Eastern Mediterranean, providing the impression of being underwater. Seven Springs, approx. 10km from Afandou

Seven Springs is one of the most charming destinations on Rhodes. It offers a cool, magical landscape, even in the heat of high summer, a true oasis actually. Your kids will surely enjoy having their ice cream or soft drink at the cafe-restaurant next to the streamlet while observing the ducks, peacocks and other animals found in the area. Seven Spring waters come out from the springs all year around, which end up in a small lake. You get to the lake walking through a narrow tunnel of 186m. The lake exists thanks to a dam built by the Italians, in order to provide the nearby Kolymbia with fresh water. The area of Seven Springs and the nearby forests are suitable for walking.

The Monastery of Tsampika

A tiny, Byzantine church, dedicated to Our Lady, located on the top of a hill which offers breathtaking views. The road to Tsambika monastery turns off the main road, some meters before the road to Tsambika beach. The road will take you half way up the hill. After this point, you need to walk up the hill, following 350 steps. It's perched high at 300m with commanding coastal views, both north over Kolymbia and south over Tsambika beach until Lindos, which makes it worth, to climb up. According to the legend, any woman having problems getting pregnant should go up there barefoot, to pray to the Virgin and she will be blessed with children. The saints day is the 7 September.

The village of Monolithos and its Castle, approx. 10km from Afandou

The main attraction of the village of Monolithos is the medieval castle, which stands among the pines on the great outcrop of an isolated rock from which the name Monolithos (lonely rock) is derived. After leaving your car at the bottom, there is a ten-minute walk that will bring you to the summit, where your only company is the sea and the fragrance of the wild herbs. Within the castle walls stands the church of Agios Panteleimon. Below the castle you will find an attractive stone building housing a small café.
